The lore of NASCAR® legend Tim Richmond is full of unforgettable moments from one of the most ostentatious drivers in the sport’s history. Still, nothing personifies Richmond’s grit, determination, and skill more than the Summer 500 in July of 1986 at Pocono Raceway. The Hendrick Motorsports® driver had already won the season’s previous race at the 2.5-mile “Tricky Triangle,” so he was already a favorite to win again in the Pennsylvania mountains. Those mountains threw a challenge to Richmond and the rest of the field, as mist and fog plagued the event. Richmond was battling near the front of the field when he found himself in the middle of a three-wide battle. Contact ensued and Richmond’s No. 25 Folgers Chevrolet was sent for a spin and was slammed into by another competitor. Richmond drove his car to pit road – backwards – and went to the attention of his Harry Hyde-led crew. Repairs were extensive, but Richmond went back on track and immediately showed he wouldn’t be deterred. Richmond had been working his way back towards the front of the field when the fog was deemed to be too dense and the race was shortened by 50 laps. From that point, Richmond wasted little time getting to the front and began to challenge his Hendrick Motorsports teammate side-by-side for the lead as the white flag was displayed. He lost the lead in turn two, but drove back to the inside of his teammate with the checkered flag in the air. The two remained door-todoor at the finish line, with Richmond being declared the winner by mere inches.
